Personalized Protection for Bank + Café Combo
Project Overview
Addressing growing public safety concerns, this project reimagined two open-concept storefronts as secure zones for employees and patrons, ensuring a safe and welcoming experience in the heart of a bustling mall. Demonstrating how safety and style can go hand-in-hand, this retrofit delivered bullet-resistant protection while keeping the brand front and center.
Challenge
Located inside a busy shopping mall, this project began with two open-concept storefronts positioned directly across from one another. One served as a café, offering food, beverages, and a casual workspace, while the other operated as a banking center with ATM access and financial services. Both spaces featured open floor plans, allowing easy access to and from the mall corridor.
Due to growing public safety concerns, the goal was to transform these open areas into secure zones where employees and patrons could safely shelter in the event of an active shooter incident within the mall. The solution had to:
- Provide reliable ballistic protection
- Maintain a welcoming, open aesthetic
- Allow controlled access without disrupting daily operations
- Support branding and customer experience
Solution
Insulgard designed and implemented a retrofit solution that enclosed both storefronts using floor-to-ceiling bullet-resistant glazing systems. These systems created a secure barrier between the tenant spaces and the mall corridor while maintaining clear sightlines and natural light.
Each storefront was equipped with a full-vision Polymer Door System to enable controlled entry and egress without compromising visibility. The glazing system was engineered to meet UL 752 Level 2 ballistic performance requirements while also supporting long-term durability in a high-traffic environment.
To ensure the design aligned with the client’s brand, custom decals were applied to the glazing, enhancing visual appeal while reinforcing identity within the newly secured spaces.
Results
The completed project successfully transformed two vulnerable, open storefronts into secure, functional environments without sacrificing aesthetics or customer experience. Key outcomes include:
